Science
As stated in the National Curriculum:
‘READY. A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
RESPECTFUL. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science.
SAFE. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.’ Here at Barley Lane we believe every student should have full access to a broad, interesting, challenging and meaningful science curriculum from Key Stage Two to Four. We protect our students into learning with relational practice, multi-sensory and practical experiences, as well as fun, engaging, accessible lessons; for example, using sheep lungs for respiration and dissecting pig hearts to understand circulation. Our aim is to ensure that all of our students leave us with the knowledge and skills to analyse and question the world around them with confidence and at a level that allows them to fully participate in society. A Barley Lane student will learn that science is fun, loud, hands on and exploratory. We will enable students to leave our care with the knowledge to not only live safely but to thrive, reach their full potential, and do so with a love of questioning the world around them. How do we intend to achieve this?
• Primary Science – Students will study Biology, Chemistry and Physics in a two-year rolling programme for Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2. The rolling programme aims to equip students with a basic overall science understanding and leave them ready to study Science at a deeper level as they grow through the school.
• In Key Stage 3 students have the opportunity to learn Biology, Chemistry and Physics in more detail via the three learning pathways. Understanding the human body makes sense to us because we all have one! Understanding the world makes sense to us because we all live here! We study a wide Exeter range of topics from infection to ecology along with a development of scientific investigation skills and safety.
Key Stage 3 Science gives a broad overview of all three sciences to lead the students into Key Stage 4. The learning pathways guide our students to obtain the knowledge and skills required to access Entry Level Science or GCSE Biology.
• At Key Stage 4 we work towards the aim of AQA GCSE Biology or an Entry Level Science qualification. The knowledge and skills acquired in Key Stage 3 are fine-tuned and extended in Key Stage 4 so that we are not only able to explain what but also why. This prepares our students for life beyond school as well as opening doors for more opportunities post-16 – further cementing our Barley Lane aim of ‘preparation for adulthood’.
