Physical Education

Physical Education is critical to pupil understanding and development in life long habits of exercise and a healthy active lifestyle. It develops pupils’ physical competence, literacy and confidence and their ability to use these to perform in a range of activities. It enhances skillfulness, physical development and knowledge of the body in action. Physical Education provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive, and cooperative and face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams.

Pupils learn how to think in different ways to suit a wide variety of creative, competitive, cooperative and challenging activities. They learn how to plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their aptitudes, abilities, preferences and make choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity.

The school seeks to provide a full, varied and interesting Physical Education curriculum which challenges, engages and excites staff and pupils alike in line with the experiences of their mainstream peers.

Aims

The aims and objectives of PE relate directly to those of Barley Lane School as a whole: namely that we endeavour to provide an educational experience that offers equality, challenge and the positive outcomes that can be achieved or experienced in mainstream education and further enhance post 16 opportunities and “life chances” or employment. We seek to achieve this by delivering at least 1 and ½ hours of PE a week, supplemented by opportunities at break and lunch times, during outdoor education and activities whereby we access a local gym and to play 5 a side. This is then extended beyond the 2 hour offer of high quality PE.
